I know what you're thinking. Budgeting...fun...really!?!?
But when the Youth Venture staff played Budget Ball last week, we learned a few important lessons while having a great time! Budget Ball is a team-based sport designed to increase awareness of the national debt and reward strategic thinking and collaborative problem-solving around the issues of fiscal responsibility and long-term debt management.
Budget Ball makes learning budgeting concepts active and fun. The game incorporates both physical and fiscal strategy to emphasize the importance of generating savings and using debt responsibly. The fiscal strategy component of the game occurs during Budgeting Sessions that take place before each period of play where each team selects a combination of three power-ups (which cost money) and/or sacrifices (which earn money). The physical strategy of the game is applied during the periods of play where teams try to pass the ball down the court to their end-zone. A full description of the rules can be found on the Budget Ball website.
Budgeting is important for every Venture and while it may not be the most exciting thing, learning good budgeting skills will definitely pay off. Additionally, we
discovered that Budget Ball is a great team-building activity for your Venture Team. While playing Budget Ball, I learned new things about some of my YV co-workers that I would have otherwise never known. For example, the next time we do a team activity, shotty Megan and her ridiculous jumping skills to be on my team!
So now do you believe me that budgeting can be fun? If so, check out Budget Ball's website to learn more about the game and perhaps even plan or participate in a Budget Ball tournament. If you're still skeptical, maybe the video below will make a believer out of you.
