Do you feel lost, stuck, or just not sure where to go with life? (If you said no, please teach me your secrets.) If you're like me, I hope you enjoy this thought exercise as much as I did. I absolutely fell in love with an article from Nora Dunn over at Wisebread called "Feeling Stuck? 100 Ways to Change your Life."So, here's how it works: You've got 20 minutes? And something to make notes on? Good. Here are Nora's step-by-step instructions for how you can 'change your life' and bring in some clarity:
- Shut out the world - just for a few minutes. Turn off everything that beeps, blinks, or demands your attention - the phone, the tv, the computer. Shut your door.
- Get a piece of paper and pen, and sit down somewhere comfy.
- Set a timer for 20 minutes.
- Go! Write down 100 things you want to do. Or careers you want to have. Or places you want to go.
- Don’t be realistic about it. Don't censor yourself - write down the craziest, most outlandish things you can think of... and also include those small things you think aren't worthy because they're so simple or obvious. Write it all down.
- Keep writing, don't stop! 20 minutes goes by quickly, and you need to get to a 100 items. Just let it flow - don't be a critic, don't think about whether or not you should write down an idea. Write it! Write down everything you can think of, even if it's nonsense. Just keep going until your timer says stop.
After time's up, put the list away. Resist the urge to pore over it, "fix" it, revise it. Leave it alone for a day. Then... come back to it. Anything strike you? Did the last 5 minutes of mad-scribbling come up with any surprises? Take a good look at it, and see if your list doesn't give you a few ideas for things you could begin doing differently right away.
Nora astutely observes that around the 15 minute mark, something in your brain begins to change. Your inner child - the big dreamer - starts to come out, no holds barred. Your creativity is unleashed.
So, what? As Nora writes, "The point of this exercise is not to create a giant and outlandish "to-do" list that never gets ticked off. Instead, it is simply to open up your mind to the idea that anything is possible, and to give you ideas that will help you to become unstuck in life."
Nora goes on to say that taking just a few minutes made her rethink her life goals. The result? She now travels the globe looking for adventure - as her job! - at theprofessionalhobo.com. Sounds like it worked for her. I'd say, give it a shot and see how it works for you. It's 20 minutes.
