Did you know that in 2010, there were 6,539 homeless persons in the District of Columbia alone? That staggering statistic gathered by the National Coalition for the Homeless highlights a big issue here in DC. We’ve spent our past few weeks as a group dissecting the concept of poverty. Does poverty simply mean being poor? As a group, we’ve put our heads together and realized there’s a lot more to it.
This week, we continued a discussion on important issues in our community. Homelessness was a social problem we found to be relevant right here in our community. After a closer look at organizations that offer solutions and support for homeless populations, our group chose to support DC Central Kitchen. DCCK is an incredible local organization. They provide breakfast, outreach, and counseling services to chronically homeless people living on the streets. Our group thought this was a great fit for our project. By selling re-usable Vapur water bottles, we’ll work to educate the rest of our community about these crucial local issues while raising funds to support their good work.
Tune in next week for more details from this spring’s DC Dream It. Do It. Challenge.
