If you ever enjoyed sleepovers, play dates, extracurricular activities, or TV as a child then you were definitely NOT raised by a tiger mom. Amy Chua, Yale professor and self-proclaimed "Tiger Mom" wrote a book chastising American parents for being too lenient and careful about their children's self-esteem. She boasts that her children never received less than an "A" and would sit at the piano for hours on end until they perfected a piece--whether or not that meant missing meals, sleep, and time with friends. This sort of discipline, she insists, is the only way to ensure long-term success.
The book stirred obvious controversy among parents over how to best help children succeed. Is studying until you reach perfection a priority? Or do social activities factor into a child's long-term success? According to a recent article, social activities are every bit (if not more!) important than memorization and intelligence alone.
According to the article, the single biggest factor in determining a student's future success is the ability to manage emotions. Emotional intelligence-- which includes self-awareness, social awareness, and the ability to manage relationships-- goes further towards ensuring your success than mere IQ.
