On Campus: Summit for the University crowd

Today's post written by YV Intern Jason Harrison.

Working as a nursing assistant in Milwaukee, Melissa Malloy kept hearing the same message from those she worked for: we need more people like you. A pre-med student at Marquette University, Melissa was passionate about patient care and eager to learn. Her motivation also stemmed from her sister Alexis, who was born with Down syndrome. Melissa knew first-hand the importance of finding caretakers for those with disabilities. She also knew that there weren’t enough to meet demand in urban communities. This led to the launch of PreMedCare.com.

“The idea is to give eager, passionate pre-med students the opportunity to care for clients living with disabilities in their community,” Melissa said. “I know there are pre-med students just like me who would do an amazing job as a care giver and could use the paid job experience […] for their future endeavors as a medical professional.”

With training, support, and seed funding from Ashoka’s Youth Venture, Melissa was able to launch PreMedCare.com and start making change. In a one-of-a-kind opportunity, young social entrepreneurs from around the world, like Melissa, will gather at the Youth Venture Summit 2011.

At the Summit you’ll be given the chance to learn from other students who have successfully launched their own ventures. You’ll share ideas about how to raise capital, launch or expand your venture, and harness the power of social media. You’ll be given a leg up as you network with ambitious and passionate entrepreneurs.

Come spend a weekend with people who “get” why and how you want to change the world. Gain access to Ashoka Fellows and other leading entrepreneurs that can help you bring your idea into reality.

The Summit will be held July 28 – 31 at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but registration ends June 10th so register now! For more information, check out www.youthventuresummit.org or feel free to contact Melissa at mmiller@youthventure.org or 703-600-8335.
