Youth Venture Spotlight: DC Panels

Last week, YV DC hosted panels with the SEGL School in Washington, D.C. Read on for a first hand perspective from Panelist and Youth Venturer Daniel Casey.

Today's post written by Daniel Casey.

Located in Dupont Circle in Washington DC, The School for Ethics and Global Leadership (SEGL) is a unique school that takes high school juniors from all over the country (and world) for a semester and immerses them within a curriculum that is designed to promote ethical leadership. As a final project, the students developed action plans for social ventures with guidance from their teachers, and the Youth Venture Staff.

Last week, I had the great opportunity to participate in venture panels for these wonderful venturers. In the course of about two hours, 12 teams presented to three panels in groups of four. Needless to say, these venturers were very impressive-- each and every presenter had a great idea on how to make positive change in their community. From the presentations I experienced, it is a safe bet that this group of high school students will, quote Bill Nye the Science Guy, CHANGE THE WORLD.

All of the presentations were impressive! One in particular that stood out to me was called Kicks For Chicks. Hailing from Alaska, this venture seeks to combine the endless appeal of the beautiful game, football (or for you American kids, soccer), and the education of young African girls. By hosting soccer camps for local kids, Kicks for Chicks will raise money for the organization BEADS, which provides a way for donors to sponsor the K-12 education of a young African girl. Despite the vast geographic distance between Alaska and Africa, this venture is steady in its resolve to further an everybody a changemaker world.
