“Launching NextGEN Policy has been a fantastic experience, made most exciting by the ability we have discovered in ourselves to rally others for the benefit of those who cannot speak up for themselves." Mary Sun, Founder, and Sameen Yusuf, President
Today we spotlight NextGEN Policy, a Venture that raises awareness about issues in the medical community, including rare disease treatment development and adolescent health policy. They inform youth on government policies surrounding these issues and encourage civic engagement through tracking policies and writing to members of congress.
We recently spoke to directors Mary Sun and Sameen Yusuf about NextGEN Policy’s success in uniting young people around these issues. NextGEN Policy has opened chapters in high schools and colleges around the country, thus empowering more students to become involved. “It’s a very positive cycle,” say Mary and Sameen. “Even though these students think we inspire them, it is really they who inspire us.”
Like any other Venture, NextGEN Policy has encountered challenges along the way. Tracking bills in congress is a long, complicated process. Mary and Sameen have benefited by reaching out to organizations focused on similar issues. “The key to the success of your Venture,” they say, “is being able to communicate clearly to those who want to help you.”
Mary and Sameen’s story reminds us that each young person has the capacity to be a changemaker. They offer a few words of encouragement to future Venturers: “Remember, it will take work but it's never as difficult as you think it is!”
