To Doodle or not to Doodle?

On Fridays, we close out the week with some brilliant ideas worth spreading. Get inspired--and share!

Today's post written by YV Intern Caitlin McCarthy

You know that feeling when you just have to start doodling? Most people think that means you are rapidly losing interest and have completely stopped paying attention. According to Sunni Brown, research has proven that it is just the opposite! Doodling not only helps you retain information, but enhances the learning experience and fosters creative problem solving skills.
In Sunni Brown's TED talk, "Doodlers, Unite!" she speaks about the brain's learning process.

Individuals have four ways to take in information, and you need to engage at least two of those components, or combine one component and an emotional experience. Doodling combines ALL of these! It has been proven that people who doodle retain 29% more information than non-doodlers! Imagine if that means 29% better grades in school, or that much better focus in an important meeting!

The only problem is that doodling gets a horrible rap, especially in school. Search through any dictionary and you will find some variation of the following definition: "to draw or scribble idly, to waste time in aimless or foolish activity." Sunni Brown is on a mission to redefine doodle as "to make spontaneous marks to help yourself think." Her goal is to build a culture that embraces doodling!

So, to all you closet doodlers or those too afraid to try, I challenge you to let it out! Create an environment of positive doodling and see what does for you. For more inspiration check out Sunni Brown's encouraging TED talk and her other cool doodle revolution videos!
