3 months later... the Somali famine worsens

Today's post written by YV Intern, Caitlin McCarthy

On July 20th, Somalia declared a state of famine. Three months later millions of people are still in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.

Here are the facts: Currently, 40% of youth are malnourished, and half of those cases are severe. Since July, over 110,000 children have been admitted to the UNICEF center for malnutrition in Mogadishu. One of the doctors at this center said that, on average, 4 of 5 children are malnourished. Farmers have lost their livestock and crops to the drought, leaving them incapable of feeding or supporting their families. And Somalis are forced to trek miles by foot to reach humanitarian care centers.

Three months after famine declaration, the statistics continue to worsen! Watch UNICEF ambassador Hannan Suliema answer some questions about the famine on YouTube.
