Global Entrepreneurship Week was launched last Monday with “Unleashing IdEA,” an event that examined the entrepreneurial potential of diaspora communities. IdEA (International Diaspora Engagement Alliance) is a new initiative of Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. It offers support to diaspora communities (first or second generation immigrants) interested in investing in their countries of origin.
IdEA is not just a new program but a new philosophy. It asks how remittances (money sent to family back home) can be turned into long term investments. Diaspora entrepreneurs are unique in that they are not merely driven by profit; instead, they possess a genuine desire to enhance the quality of life in their countries of origin. IdEA offers the resources necessary for a new generation of diaspora entrepreneurs to make a lasting difference in these countries.
